A Norwich business is playing its part to put the city and Norfolk in the frontline of the campaign to encourage people to turn away from plastic drinking straws.
George Wickham’s (pictured) company, Summit Supplies, provides hospitality goods for bars, clubs, restaurants and cafes all over the county and is already stocking the biodegradable straws backed by the Last Plastic Straw Campaign.
“Plastic straws never really break down – they are always there until the end of time. These biodegradable straws break down in about a year,” he said.
Mr Wickham’s neighbour, Mike Baxter, of Gonzo’s Tea Room, is heading the campaign in Norwich and first alerted him to the problem.
Now he is joining the fight by encouraging his customers all over Norfolk – as well as the rest of us – to make the change.
To make it even easier to switch, Mr Wickham is selling them at a reduced price. “A box of 250 should retail at £2.41 but I’m selling them for £1.99,” he said. “This is an important issue.”
It’s not only bars and restaurants who can help – playgroups, care homes, community groups and anyone who uses straws in the home are also urged to change their normal straws for biodegradable versions.
