The Big C Centre, Norwich, opens its doors to offer help and support to anyone living with and beyond cancer.
Charities and Norfolk & Norwich hospital staff are coming together under one roof to inform cancer patients and their families and friends of all the help available to them in our region.
The Big C Centre, based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital, is opening its doors on Saturday 11th May 11am-4pm and is working with charities such as Age UK and Crossroads, and various NHS specialists. They will offer support and advice on subjects that affect people living with cancer; such as work, talking to children, money matters, healthy eating, travel insurance, body image, psychosexual issues, exercise and more. There will also be tasters for people to try from recipes taken from specialist cancer recipe books. A stand with information on every cancer support group known to us in Norfolk and north Suffolk will also be there for anyone who feels they could benefit from such a group.
The Norfolk & Norwich Hospital and Big C will also have their specialists there, such as our Welfare Rights Advisor, nutritional experts and Health Care Professionals, as well as the friendly staff of the Centre itself. Information for children and teenagers, whether they are the patient themselves or their parent has cancer, will also be available. Carers of cancer patients are an important group and the day will include information on support for carers, including our new Carer’s Club. There will also be 10 minute talks by professionals every half-hour. Also taster sessions such as hand massage available all day. There will be information about Community Support.
Jill Chapman, the Big C Centre Manager says:
‘When someone is diagnosed with cancer the whole family is affected. There is a lot of information, advice and support in our region but we need to make sure people know about it. The hospitals all do a fantastic job in supporting patients and as we know everyone’s situation is different, which is why we’re working with other charities and NHS specialists to offer this day. We hope there will be something to help everyone take back some control of their lives and to move forward.’
Refreshments are on offer all day and the event is entirely free. The aim is to hold this event every 6 months. Visit the Big C Centre on Saturday 11th May between 11am and 4pm. There is no need to book. The car park costs £2 all day. Find the Big C Centre at NNUH, near car park K, next to the Colney Centre. Big C is a completely independent charity and all the support, funding and services are for the people of Norwich and Waveney. Money raised goes to help people in your community who are affected by cancer.
We fund ground-breaking research into beating cancer at UEA as well as paying for support and vital life-saving equipment. We run Big C’s Cancer Support and Information Centres, based at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and Regent Street in Great Yarmouth, and we are currently raising money for more centres around Norfolk with our Closer to You initiative.
No one in Norfolk should face cancer alone. With us, you won’t.
