Emma’s dares for charity are creating a stir

It’s a fact of life that parents embarrass their children.

But Emma Mortimer is taking that a step further by generally making a fool of herself in the name of charity.

She came up with Emma’s Dares for Dosh, alongside training for the London Marathon in April to raise money for the charity Get Kids Going, which gives disabled children the chance to participate in sports.

“I wanted to do something fun to raise money and the idea of Emma’s Dares for Dosh came to me. It would appear my friends and family have taken great delight in sponsoring me to humiliate myself in public.”

They have been daring her to carry out weird and wonderful tasks in return for their donation to the cause.

So far that has included singing Annie show tunes on the town clock in the centre of North Walsham, a run around Cromer to the Rocky theme tune, having a moustache for a day, a Beyonce dance video (trust me that’s worth a watch), Christmas shopping dressed as the Grinch, having her 10-year-old son and his friend giving her a haircut and challenging strangers to arm wrestles whilst dressed as Hulk Hogan.

“I’ve got so many more dares lined up to do, I won’t have a shred of dignity left by April,” she said, clearly not worried about that fact.

“Annie was definitely the most embarrassing. I had cars beeping horns as they drove past. As for Beyonce, well I get my dance moves from my dad (butcher Icarus Hines),” she said.

“My children are mortified by some of the dares I have been given, mainly because they are shared on social media for all to see. Isabelle, my daughter, said the other day: ‘Is she really my Mother?’ with a look of dismay on her face. But I like to think its teaching her and Felix (my son) a valuable lesson – even if they have disowned me.”

Emma, who owns bespoke jewellery company Beach Hut Charm, first started running a couple of years ago with a few friends. “I really needed to lose weight and get fit and we did the Couch – 5k running app. I couldn’t even run down the road before I started but after that I really got the running bug.

“I have met some amazing friends through running and am now a member of the Colitshall Jaguars Running Club (they are awesome). I would really encourage anyone wanting to get fit to give running a go. It doesn’t take long to build up your stamina and miles and if I can do it anyone can.”

She’s the second family member to raise funds for her particular charity. “My mum ran the London Marathon for them a few years ago and I was fortunate enough to secure a place with them for this year. It’s a great, some of these young people have made it through to the Paralympic games.

“The training is going really well so far I am really looking forward to the Marathon day itself, although am sure the nerves will kick in nearer the time.”

Emma needs to raise £2,000 for her marathon charity place and is already past the halfway mark, with the promise of more money on its way.

She said: “I’ve been completely blown away by people’s generosity and support.”
